Kemari Morgan was one year old.
On May 24, 2025, he was found unresponsive in a Person County foster home while the county had custody of him.
Toxicology later showed a fatal dose of several medications.
The foster parent was indicted for second-degree murder.
Nine days after he died, I stood at the Person County commissioners’ meeting and told that board to bring his sister home that night. She was still in the house where he had died.
I asked where the due process was.
I called it stealing kids, because removal is the most serious power a county has, and Person County had used it and then lost the child.
I will fight that hard here.
Cabarrus funds the same department. If a child dies in county custody, I will demand an outside review before this board adds another dollar or another social-worker position.
If a surviving sibling is left in the home where the death happened, I will say so in the meeting, on the record, and I will not accept “confidentiality” as a reason to wait.
I cannot order a judge.
I can refuse to fund a system that takes children and then fails them, and I can make the vote public.
Defending children is not a new program.
It is the willingness to confront the people who already have the child. I did that in Roxboro for a boy who was not mine. I will do it in Cabarrus for the ones who are.
