Thomas Hill is the Libertarian candidate for Cabarrus County Commission.
He has lived in Cabarrus County since 1972 and graduated from Central Cabarrus High School in 1984.
He is a journeyman electrician with 44 years of experience, 18 of them in his family’s electrical business.
He is running because county government is where the tax bill, the permit counter, the jail, and the power to take a child are decided.
For more than 27 years he has worked to give a voice to the voiceless and a hand up to the unhoused, the addicted, the sick, and the suffering, and to stand against oath-breakers and innocence-takers. Healing Our America, his grassroots service ministry, is voluntary help, not a government program.
That work has put him in rooms where officials would rather not be questioned.
In October 2021, Gastonia police attacked homeless war veteran Joshua Rohrer and tased his service dog, Sunshine, who later died. With members of the Libertarian Party of North Carolina and You Are The Power, Thomas was on the front lines of Rohrer’s defense.
At those meetings he met Pastor Moses Colbert, whose Faith, Hope, and Love Enrichment Ministry was being harassed by Gastonia officials.
The city threatened to close the ministry and take the church property. A small group of libertarians, anarchists, and other defenders of dignity fought the closure. The historic African-American church and its homeless ministry remained open.
On June 2, 2025, after one-year-old Kemari Morgan died in a Person County foster home, Thomas told that board to bring the surviving child home that night and asked where the due process was. He will bring the same standard to Cabarrus: an outside review when a child dies in county custody, and no added money for a department that can take a child and then fail him.
He serves as webmaster and social media coordinator for Dr. Mary J. Ruwart and as Donor & Foundations Relations Director with Liberty International, and he volunteers with the Libertarian Party of North Carolina and You Are The Power.
His past roles include development director of the Foundation for a Free Society, campaign manager for Lee Wrights for President in 2012, and assistant campaign manager for Dr. Mary Ruwart in 2008.
He received the Libertarian Party of North Carolina (LPNC) Most Valued Activist Award in 2003, its Most Outspoken for Liberty Award in 2004, and the Libertarian Party of Illinois Crispus Attucks Award for Libertarian Activist of the Year in 2012.
His most recent recognition is the 2026 Tom Howe Liberty Warrior Award by the LPNC
On the board, he will fund deputies as peacekeepers, not revenuers.
He supports a decent starting salary and psychological support for officers. He opposes no-knock culture, civil asset forfeiture sharing, and qualified immunity treated as a blank check.
He will require a public explanation before another jail pod is funded, judge town contracts by response time rather than tickets, keep small-job permits from stalling a one-truck shop, and refuse to fine a ministry out of existence for feeding people the county will not house.
He is not running to build a career. He is running so those questions are harder to skip.
